Only use in patients who have inadequate response to a maximally titrated dose of allopurinol, who are intolerant to allopurinol, or for whom treatment w/ allopurinol is not advisable. Discontinue treatment in case of allergic reactions. Rare reports of potentially life-threatening skin rashes (SJS). Wait for gout attack to subside before starting treatment. A flare-up may occur even while on treatment, & especially during the 1st wk or mth of treatment. Treatment w/ uric acid-lowering medicines could lead to xanthine build-up in the urinary tract (w/ possible stones) in patients w/ very high urate levels (eg, patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy). Perform blood tests to check if liver function is normal. Patients w/ existing or history of heart failure, heart problems or stroke; renal disease &/or serious allergic reaction to allopurinol; liver disease or liver function test abnormalities. Patients being treated for high uric acid levels as a result of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Patients w/ thyroid problems. Patients w/ established CV disease. Intolerance to some sugars. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not use during pregnancy & if breastfeeding. Do not give to childn <18 yr.
